Banned Books Week was launched WAAAAY back in 1982, in response to a surge in the number of challenges made to books across libraries, schools and bookstores. Unfortunately, it has NOT gotten better since 1982.
In 2023, there was a RECORD-BREAKING number of books challenged. 4,240 unique titles were targeted — a 65% increase over 2022.
Prior to 2021, the average number of unique titles targeted per year was just 273. Book bans DO NOT protect children. Banning books is a form of censorship. It suppresses ideas. It prevents students and children from accessing books that can be tools for learning. It discourages freedom of thought and restricts exposure to important perspectives.
