We strive to empower women – through our actions and our art. We’ve developed a collection of some of our favorite feminist icons who have paved the way for us, empowered us, inspired us and challenged us to help forge a more inclusive world.
WHY FEMINIST ART
One of our most frequently asked questions is, “How do you choose which women to illustrate?” The quick answer is, “We believe in equal rights.” Women should have the right to make their own choices with their bodies.
Women’s March, Memphis, January 2017
Love is love, and equality should apply to ALL, not some. Black lives matter. Women should NOT be consistently paid less than men.
We know, firsthand, the importance of social welfare systems, as we personally were assisted during a layoff in 2010 and, along with millions of other wonderful small businesses, relied heavily on those funds during the height of the pandemic. Our commitment to equity is at the center of every decision we make as a company. And, that’s how we choose which women to illustrate. We focus on women who share these values and whose work supports the fight for equal rights. These women inspire us, and we’ve seen how they inspire others.
When deciding what quote to hand letter for each illustration, we choose words that speak to us and our experiences as women. Here are a few examples:
As small business owners, we are not perfect and have experienced failure numerous times. But, we’ve always remained committed to our craft and to building ARCHd into a company that both inspires others and makes a difference.
We’ve been fortunate enough to work and collaborate with other women for much of our careers, through a variety of experiences. We have seen the strength and creativity that occurs as a result of women coming together. Michelle says it best, “There is no limit to what we, as women, can accomplish.”
Though the above quote came from a speech made during a truly heartbreaking time, Hillary continues to prove her resilience, while encouraging others to understand their worth. She’s taught us that, while we may get knocked down or not always get it right, we deserve our successes.
ART THAT INSPIRES
One of our favorite things is reading the why behind a customer buying our art. Mothers are decorating their daughters' nurseries with art of these strong women. Women are gifting our art to celebrate each other’s promotions at work. Friends are gifting new law school grads bookend sets featuring RBG and Sonia Sotomayor. Customers who share our values are displaying art of these women in their homes and offices. Seeing their excitement encourages us to keep creating.
We believe in equal rights for all and were looking for a way to turn our art into activism, but we recognize we’re not experts on the subject. So, we decided to give back a portion of our sales to organizations doing the work. In doing so, we hope to not only support organizations that are working toward empowering women and positively impacting and uplifting the Black community, but also to educate both ourselves and our customers on these issues. With every order we ship out, we include a small flyer about the organization we’re supporting that month – to raise awareness about the organization’s mission and encourage our customers to get involved.
Your purchases have helped support organizations like EMERGE, who finds and recruits Democratic women who should run for office (and win!). Like Campaign Zero, who encourages policymakers to focus on solutions with the strongest evidence of effectiveness at reducing police violence. And like the Center for Reproductive Rights, who advocates to advance reproductive rights as fundamental human rights around the world. To learn about other organizations we’ve supported, click here. We always welcome recommendations for innovative and inspiring organizations that are doing great work. Email us at email@example.com if you have suggestions.
While our feminist art is not our only collection, it is the one we are most passionate about. Learning more about these women and their work has inspired us to become more involved and support the issues that are important to us. For example, Lindsey recently joined the Memphis Community Board for Planned Parenthood of Tennessee and North Mississippi! We are excited to continue to create art featuring strong women and can’t wait to see where it leads us.
With thanks and every good wish,
Kristen & Lindsey
