5 tips for writing an About Us page
When sitting down to write our About Us page here on the ARCHd website, we sat in front of our computer screens for a good five minutes before turning to each other with, “What should we say?”
What should we say? How personal should we be? How professional? First person or third? More about us or about ARCHd? There are tons of tutorials and tips and how to’s out there about design and writing for the web. In just 0.54 seconds, Google found us 2.8 billion results.
Here is what worked for us.
1. BE VISUAL.
Include photos. One of the first skills you learn about writing is to show rather than tell. People like pretty things to look at more than they like words to read.
2. BE CONCISE.
You aren’t writing a novel. People have short attention spans. Take advantage of that by getting quickly to the point.
3. SHOW PERSONALITY.
If you don’t have one, Google one. See what we did there? That’s sarcasm, which is a distinct component of both of our personalities. People aren’t buying your products from a machine. They’re buying them from a person. Show them who you are.
4. STAND OUT.
Similar to showing your personality, you are part of what makes your products stand out. Give readers something they’ll remember.
5. DON’T OVERTHINK IT.
Not everyone is going to enjoy your work. Don’t spend forever trying to appeal to everyone. Proofreading is recommended, second-guessing yourself is not.
As a way to be visual, show personality and stand out, we took a series of photos to visually show our story after concisely telling ARCHd’s. View our full About Us page here.
